The Golden Circle + horse ride
![]() |
This day tour is the same as the Golden Circle tour, but in addition we will join a ride of 1 1/2 - 2 hours on Icelandic horses. You need little or no riding experience and during this comfortable ride you will experience easy and beautiful riding tracks. The Golden Circle is one of Iceland‘s most popular day tours. You can observe the beauty of Iceland´s nature and learn about the country´s history, dating back to the settlement era. We begin the day by driving to an icelandic german family that are running a farm in the south of Iceland, the farm at Herridarholl.
This family has around 100 icelandic horses, 280 sheep and about 25 - 30 milking cows and about 70 younger calfs and cows. At Herridarholl we will join a ride of 1 1/2 - 2 hours on Icelandic horses. From Herridarholl we will drive to the waterfall Urridafoss and then to Skalholt where the first bishop, Isleifur Gissurarson, was ordained in 1056. Skalholt was the bishopric of South Iceland and a cultural and educational centre for 700 years.

From Skalholt we drive to one of the world´s most active geothermal fields, the Geothermal field at Haukadalur, where plenty of boiling springs and hot mud pots are to be found. The Great Geyser is what this geological phenomenon is named by. Strokkur, another famous geyser nearby, erupts every few minutes, shooting a tower of water and steam 30 meters into the air. Following, we will visit the Golden Falls, one of the most impressive cascades in Europe.
There we can view the history of Sigridur Tomasdottir from Brattholt. It is suspected that Sigridur managed to prevent the harnessing of the waterfall, which had been planned for electricity generating purposes. Next destination on this trip is Thingvellir, where we will review the nation´s history. At Thingvellir, Althingi - the national parliament – was founded around 930, and continued to convene there until 1798.
Many major historical events in the Icelandic history have taken place at Thingvellir. Today, Thingvellir is a national park, which is meant to remain in public ownership and be protected by Althingi forever. On our way back to the hotel we will pass Nesjavellir Geothermal Power Plant. Our guide will talk about the country´s unique geology and how Icelanders harness geothermal energy in an environmentally friendly way. At last we will drive through the village Selfoss and then back to the hotel. This is an exciting day tour for adults and children alike to meet the actual inhabitants of the countryside and to learn more about Icelandic farming and agriculture.
