Landmannalaugar hot pool
Landmannalaugar from Stracta Hotel is certainly our most popular tour during summer. Landmannalaugar, the pearl of the interior is situated in a valley between colourful mountains at the dark edge of the rhyolite lava field Laugahraun. Many hot, beside cold springs create a warm bathing brook, in the middle of this spectacular setting.
Hjalp waterfall
Hjálp waterfall:
First we drive to the waterfall Hjalp. The Basalt Figures around the waterfall is overall, a beautiful frame of foaming water.
Stöng:
Secondly we will drive to Stöng where there are ruins of a real Viking settlement farm. The farm is believed to have been buried under the volcanic ash in 1104 following the eruption of the volcano Hekla. The Viking Gaukur Þrándilsson lived at Stöng.
Gjáin:
Thirdly our destination is the small valley Gjáin with its small waterfalls together with ponds and volcanic structures.
Háifoss waterfall
Háifoss and Granni:
Fourthly our destination is Háifoss (meaning “High Waterfall”) and this waterfall is one of the tallest one in Iceland. It is located in one of most dramatic cascades and is 122 meters high (400 feet) and falling into a rugged volcanic canyon. There you also see alongside its “twin,” the waterfall Granni
Ljotipollur crater
Ljotipollur (Ugly puddle):
Fifthly we drive up to the highland towards Ljotipollur (Ugly pool), a crater formed in a 15th century eruption. At this point we will be ready at this point for bathing in a hot natural pool or wanting to go hiking, which ever you feel like doing, we now drive to Landmannalaugar. Once we feel energized enough to move on, we drive down Domadalur, a luscious valley just north of the volcano Hekla.
Fossabrekkur:
Thereafter we drive to Fossabrekkur, a unique and beautiful green oases with many small waterfalls more than 150 meters wide. Fossabrekkur are in fact the uppermost waterfalls in the river Ytri Rangá.
Þjofafoss waterfall
Þjófafoss:
Lastly we will visit Þjófafoss, waterfall that is in the river Þjórsá and the name translates as “thieves’ waterfall,” as thieves used to be executed by drowning in its pool. The waterfall is one of the three main waterfalls in Þjórsá.
Summing up, we can expect to see colourful mountains and craters formed in an eruption on the 15th century unusual landscape surprisingly like on the moon. Our feeling is, Landmannalaugar jeep day tour is overall undoubtedly most important tour than any other during summer. The road to Landmannalaugar is only open during the summer months.
